One Health is an approach to public health that recognizes the inter-dependence between humans, animals, plants and the environment. One Health has special relevance in regions like the Arctic, where people live close to the land and depend upon wild plants and animals for food and other resources.
The One Health Group was started in 2013 as a forum to raise awareness about emerging One Health issues in Alaska as well as neighboring northern regions. The meetings are held quarterly at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control offices in Anchorage Alaska. It is also provided as a webinar and is attended by participants from Alaska, Western and Northern Canada and across the US. The group provides a forum for sharing updates on One Health related events around the Circumpolar North.
The meeting format includes a review of seasonal weather trends, recent One Health relevant observations (e.g. LEO Network), as well as agency rounding and presentations on hot topics. The meeting is co-hosted by Michael Brubaker of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC), Center for Climate and Health and Dr. Michael Bruce of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Arctic Investigations Program.
The group attracts professionals interested in One Health from Northern and Western Canada, Alaska and other parts of the United States and is open to participants in fields related to management of plants, animals and wildlife, veterinary medicine, environmental management and public health.
